Forget the lawyers, kill the spammers

Yesterday afternoon, I managed to break just about everything on my server. After putting it back together (mostly), I discovered that I had a bad network cable that had just enough noise in it to allow some things to work and other things not to. So when I put in a new cable, all of the stored comments for all of my posts in the last couple months came flooding out of the queue and into the “Awaiting moderation” folder. All 600 of ‘em. I think I caught the couple that were legit. (Sorry Ken and Jay…. I see you guys tried to leave a comment back in December.) So now I’m trying to get control of the spam problem. Initially I thought that by just moderating the comments and selecting which ones were real, that I could control it. But the volume of spam has increased beyond belief, and I can’t even keep up with it anymore. So I’m trying some new solutions. Fortunately, I’m not alone in the problem.
Truly, truly, I believe that there is a special place in Hell reserved for these lowlifes.
